Through Black Spruce – Joseph Boyden This book has parallel plot lines. The problem is that inevitably one plot line is more interesting than the other. They did come together but I found the ending disappointing.
Reconstruction – Mick Herron – I was told I would be unable to put this book down. It was true, it is a book that just keeps leading you on. Set aside a full afternoon.
Infidel – Ayaan Hirsi Ali - I think this is an important book. Very thought provoking in many ways.
Murder in Amsterdam – the Death of Theo van Gogh and the Limits of Tolerance – Ian Baruma – I read this because of its relation to Infidel. I am now thinking a lot about multi-culturalism.
Scar Tissue – Michael Ignatieff – Yes, the Michael Ignatieff. This book was nominated for the Booker Prize. I think it is really cool that we could have a Prime Minister who wrote fiction.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time – Mark Haddon – Another compelling book. The story is told from the perspective of an autistic boy which gives the author a lot of room for movement. Refreshing.
A Minus Tide – Robin Beeman – At least it was short
Mariana – Monica Dickens - A charming book in a ‘cup of tea on a quiet afternoon’ sort of way
The Murder Stone – Louise Penney - I like these mysteries set in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. They whisk you away to a place where murders happen but are always solved and there is little blood.
